English Literature
The literature section of LMU's English Department has a long and distinguished history of teaching and research....
Our courses cover a broad range of research topics, methodologies and literary periods from the Middle Ages to the present day. We encourage students to engage in critical reading and systematic scholarly analysis of literary texts, as well as in theoretical reflection on methods and models in literary, cultural and media studies. Whilst our partner institute within the department, the Amerika-Institut, specialises in American literary and cultural history, our focus is primarily on the literature of the British Isles and other global literatures in English. A particular asset of LMU’s English department is its long-established Munich Shakespeare Library, the only research library on the European continent specialising in the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
